2024 Ralph Flower Engineering Award

Job description

The Ralph Flower Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Cross Manufacturing, presents The Ralph Flower Engineering Award.

This award financially supports one student pursuing an accredited engineering degree who demonstrates exceptional passion and potential to become a world-class Engineer.

The successful award recipient will receive:

  • One year of financial sponsorship from The Flower Trust
  • A one-year paid student placement at Cross Manufacturing
  • A certificate of achievement

Award Year 1 (2nd year of the student’s academic study):

  • Sponsorship of 3 x £750 made to the student by The Flower Trust
  • Payments will be made regularly in the first year of the award
  • Payments will be released by the University upon approval of The Flower Trust with regards to performance, progress, attendance etc
  • Mentoring programme provided by Cross Manufacturing (by an IMechE accredited employee)
  • Opportunity to meet with Trust members & Cross Manufacturing to discuss progress throughout the year

Award Year 2 (3rd year of the student’s academic study):

  • 1 year, paid student work placement & mentoring with Cross Manufacturing (by an IMechE accredited employee)
  • The potential opportunity for a further career with Cross Manufacturing in an Engineering role
  • Opportunity to meet with Trust members to discuss progress throughout the year

Qualifying Criteria, eligible students must:

  • Be in the 2nd academic year of an IMechE accredited Mechanical Engineering Degree (Masters) and on target for an excellent final grade
  • Be able to demonstrate a clear passion for engineering, through examples of practical activity outside of current course work, seeking a life-long career as a Chartered Engineer
  • Have the right to work in the UK and successfully pass a BPSS check. ITAR restrictions will also apply to the placement

Company Background:

A world leading manufacturer of precision engineered high temperature metallic seals, retaining rings and brush seals for aircraft engines, gas and steam turbines, vehicle turbochargers, control valves and many other challenging industrial environments.

Cross Manufacturing supply seals to OEM companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation. The company employs circa 500 staff across 3 sites in Bath and Devizes. This is a placement year based at one of our 3 manufacturing plants in Devizes or Bath.

Duties and Responsibilities

Placement Details:

  • Structured tour of core manufacturing areas to gain an understanding of the production of complex components using traditional and special processes, from turning to welding
  • Remainder of placement to be spent in the Engineering and R&D department, integrating into a diverse and experienced team of engineers & technicians, world renowned in their fields, with a passion for engineering
  • Producing drawings and designs in SolidWorks
  • Producing manufacturing routes with Microsoft Dynamics 365 ERP system
  • Operation of our extensive in house test facilities
  • Design analysis using first principles, in house design codes and potentially utilising FEA & CFD
  • A project such as a manufacturing machine design from concept through to sourcing manufactured components and overseeing the assembly and hands on commissioning, or an R&D based project involving design of sub-scale test components and possible test rig hardware. The planning and operation of test rigs, with report writing and analysis
  • The placement year will be a fixed term contract position, the length of which can vary depending on the needs of the candidate and Cross Manufacturing
  • Interviews to be held at Cross Manufacturing at the beginning of November 2024
