CNC Programmer / Operator

Job description

Reporting to the Brush Seal Supervisor, we are looking for a pro-active highly skilled, highly motivated individual to join a small team producing precision parts and tooling supporting the South Site production facility.

The primary purpose of this role is to create and manage CNC programs and instructions used in the manufacture of production parts during their new product introduction (NPI) phase. This will also include updating existing programs following design changes and program control management.

The successful candidate will be responsible for programming a variety of machines such as CNC lathes, VMC’s, EDM, laser cutting, and inspection systems such as CMM’s and Optical measuring machines, using a range of control systems.

When programming needs are met, the successful individual will be expected to support the manufacturing departments as a machine operative.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Writing programs offline used in the machining and measuring of detailed parts using a wide range of machinery including, but not limited to:
    • CNC Lathes & Machining centres
    • Electro-Discharge Machines (EDM)
    • CMM & Optical measuring machines
  • Support production with the calibration of tooling using CMM & Optical measuring machines.
  • Manage program control and updates following design changes.
  • Providing regular and consistent support to production and project teams.
  • Provide support on introduction of new processes and machinery.
  • Provide support in problem solving of product related issues, specifically production tooling and processing.
  • Supporting and mentoring apprentices.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Extensive experience programming and operating CNC machines as a skilled machinist.
  • Experience of CAD CAM/offline programming.
  • Apprenticeship to a minimum of City & Guilds or professional equivalent, mechanically biased
  • Capable of interpreting engineering schematics and drawings.
  • Talented multi-skilled engineer proficient in most common metalworking practices.
  • Ability to comply with all company documentation, work instructions and policies relevant to the department.
  • Produce parts that conform to the drawing requirements. This will include following the OVP process using the relevant measuring equipment recording data as required.
  • Ensuring all documentation including works orders and inspection DIP’s are completed and operations booked on the ERP system.
  • Working to the necessary deadlines to support production requirements.
  • PC skills required for basic use of Outlook, Word, Excel and SharePoint to view documents.
  • An approach to work which seeks Continuous Improvement in all activities.
  • Adherence to Health and Safety procedures
  • Understand the implications and requirements of external regulations and standards, particularly ISO9001, ISO14001, IATF16949 and manufacturing legislation.
  • Demonstrated experience in Manufacturing CI support role with in-depth working knowledge of Lean principles.
  • Experienced engineer who can educate and develop engineering teams and provide engineering excellence solutions.
  • Demonstrated expertise in problem solving, project and time management skills and meeting deadlines.
  • Experienced in providing hands on support to the operations team to resolve and improve processing capability and reliability issues on production plant.
  • Establishing process control.
  • Leading or participate in new product introduction and overseeing and managing complete development process.
  • Maintaining an awareness of current processing advances and technologies relative to conventional and traditional manufacture making appropriate recommendations.

Further Information

  • This is a full-time, permanent position that will be subject to a 6-month probation period.
  • Hours:  39 hours per week, Monday – Thursday 07:30am – 4:30pm and Friday 07:30am – 12:30pm. As the role develops, working rotating shifts may be required.
